Dear Der #14: Day Off

On the Road To Tarascon

9.4.13, 9:13 AM

Der,

Wednesdays seem good off days. I relish the way the city is working when I’m out and about, and how I don’t have to go out on the weekend when the streets are busy.

Here’s the game plan:

After this email, I’ll read “A Hunger Artist” very slowly. I could use some weird Kafka right now.

At noon, I’ll see Blue Jasmine at the theater next to Lincoln Center.

Then, I’ll eat lunch at Eisenberg’s, a tuna melt, matzo ball soup, and a malted milkshake.

Then, I’ll walk to the Met and focus on van Gogh. I’ve been thinking about him lately.

Then, I’ll amble home through Central Park and stare at the people and trees.

Tonight, I’ll watch a couple of movies with Becca, probably The Seventh Veil and some other World War II-era British flick. Maybe That Hamilton Woman. I’ve always had a major crush on Vivien Leigh. She and Becca remind me of each other.

Tomorrow, I’ll be back at it.

I can’t do anything on days off unless I plan. I can’t work on days on unless I have no schedule. If I’m going to work in the morning but know I have to stop by 4:00 for some obligation, I will rush my sentences. I need to know I have all the time in the world.

Today I need the exact opposite. My mind is all over. Painting, film, milkshake, and matzo balls will do me good.

Love,

-st
